CME Exchange Reports 129% Surge in Crypto Derivatives Volume for April, Led by Ether Futures
CME Group’s cryptocurrency derivatives market experienced a significant increase in trading activity last month, with average daily volume reaching 183,000 contracts, equivalent to $8.9 billion notional. The 129% year-over-year surge highlights growing institutional participation in crypto markets.
Ether derivatives were the primary driver of this growth. ETH futures average daily volume (ADV) soared 239% to 14,000 contracts, while micro ether futures surged 165% to 63,000. Micro Bitcoin futures also saw strong growth, rising 115% to 78,000 contracts. CME’s standard contracts represent 5 BTC or 50 ETH, while micro contracts allow for precise trading in 0.1 coin increments.
